RUGBY FOOTBALL.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. PONSONBY PLAY MANUKAU. GRAMMAR MEETS TEACHERS. With four more Saturdays to go in. the Auckland senior Rugby championship, Grammar Schools' Old Boys (18 points) and Ponsonby (17), are well out in front, and although 'Varsity and Manukau have still a chance, the commanding position of the leaders makes their chances rosiest. Manukau Rovers are drawn to play Ponsonby at No. 1, Eden Park to-morrow, and the westerners' will be right out to make amends for their double figures defeat there by 'Varsity last week. In the curtain-raiser, Training College, fresh from vacation, may give another of those sparkling displays which sometimes gives the best of teams a set-back. The remaining three games are scheduled for outeide grounds. Otahuhu-'Varsity are billed for the Showgrounds, GraftonMarists for the Domain, and College Rifles-Technical Old Boys for Victoria Park—all at 3 o'clock. The present positions of the teams in the senior championship are: —Grammar 18, Ponsonby 17, Varsity 14, Manukau 13, Marist 12, Technical and College Rifles 9, Grafton, Training College and Otabuhu 6. The Prime Minister, the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes, and party have been invited to be the guests of the union at Eden Park to-morrow. Mr. Forbes was half-back of the Canterbury rep. fifteen which defeated 'Auckland at Potter's Paddock by 24 points to nil, on September 7, 1892, forty years ago to the Saturday. In a Rugby, football match to-day Manawlienua beat Taranakl by 18 points to 14, after a good game played on a greasy field. Taranakl was superior throughout the opening spell, but Manawhenua made a vastly improved showing throughout the final spell. Manawhenua owed its victory principally to solid, dashing forwards. Tries were scored for Manawhenua by Cooper, Johnston, Wasley and Elliott. Barrett converted three tries. For Taranakl F. Young and Ivinsella scored, F. Young converted one try and kicked two penalty goals.
