TARIFF REVISION.

■ SECONDARY INDUSTRIES. INSPECTION BY MINISTERS. USE OF N.Z. RAW MATERIALS. STATEMENT BY MR. MASTERS. The objects of the Ministerial visits of inspection which are to be paid to manufacturing industries in Auckland were outlined by the Hon. R. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce, on his arrival from Wellington this ■morning. He made it clear that Cabinet wished to be in full possession of all details concerning secondary industries should the question of tariff revisions have to be considered, in the light of the Ottawa agreement. "It is my desire," said the Minister, "to make myself fully conversant with the various industries operating in New Zealand, so that I will have an intelligent grasp of the position when it comes up for consideration, if it does. W© are particularly interested in those industries which are using New Zealand raw materials, those using partially-New Zealand raw materials, and those using imported British raw materials. Obviously industries that are using our own raw products and giving work to our own people would, provided they are economically administered and. conducted on sound lines, receive a greater measure of consideration when the subject comes under review." Mr. Masters said that the inspections by himself and the Prime Minister would be of considerable value to the Government. They were seeking a personal knowledge of how the Auckland industries were working. In the. near future the secondary industries would probably call for a good deal of consideration, perhaps arising 'out of tie decisions at Ottawa. "The Prime Minister felt as I do," added the Minister, "that it was our duty to become personally acquainted with those industries, so that when the time arrived to make decisions regarding questions that will call for our serious consideration, we would be the better equipped by having been personally in touch with what was being done in the factories in Auckland city, as we were in Christchurch. I feel sure that the results of our visit will be beneficial to ourselves, and, I trust, to New Zealand as a whole." The-Prime Minister and Mr. Masters will visit Auckland factories on Monday afternoon arid throughout Tuesday.
