OLD AGREEMENT OPERATING.
It is anticipated that within the next few days a date will lie fixed for the conference which is to take place to consider the terms of a new agreement for the Seamen's Union to replace that Which formally expired yeeterday.
Until new arrangements are made, seamen throughout New Zealand will continue to work under the existing agreement, which expressly provides for this contingency. As already announced, the first move has come from the shipowners, who have presented new proposals to the men. The outstanding claim relates to the payment of wages, a 20 per cent reduction on existing rates ■being suggested. Although other details are not disclosed, it is gathered that alterations in conditions of work are also proposed.
No information is available as to whether the owners' idea is to negotiate a new unregistered >agreement aloiij* the lines of the present arrangement, or to seek an agreement through the channels of the Conciliation Council.
A statement setting out the union'? counter-proposals ie expected to bo issued shortly from headquarters in Wellington.
