MR, DOWNIE STEWART'S VIEWS

NEW YORK, August 31

The New Zealand Minister of Finance, Mr. W. Downie Stewart, arrived at New York from Ottawa.

Discussing the Empire Conference, he eaid that although the agreements reached would divert some trade from outside countries, such as the United States, the revival of trade within, the Empire would help to restore its buying eventually in different countries. The Ottawa agreements were not directed- against, other countries, but would l>e helpful by stimulating the Empire economically. Although the agreement between Canada and Britain would divert United States trade the policy involved no hostile attitude toward the United States. . ;
