PERSONAL.

Dr. J. T. Irving, of Christchurch, will be a passenger to England by the Rangitata on Saturday. Mr.. W. Newton, acting-Conciliation Commissioner, arrived this morning by train. He is at the Station Hotel. Mr. H. G. R. Mason, Mr. R. Semple and Mr. H. M. Rushworth, M.P.'s, left for Wellington by train last evening. Mr. J. R. Smith and Mr. W. L. Harrison have been appointed to the engineering staff of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board. Mr. H. O. Nolan, president of the Auckland Racing Club, is at present in Wellington. He is expected to return to-morrow morning. Mr. J. Purtell, who has been in Cliristeliurch in connection with the confectionery workers' dispute, 3 - eturned this morning by the Limited express. Mr. W. A. Smith, of Christchnrch, president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, is visiting Auckland. He will be at the Grand Hotel until Saturday. Dr. W. Newlands and Mr. C. M. Gilray have been unanimously recommended as members of the New Zealand University Senate by the Otago District Court of Convocation. Mr. F. Langstone, M.P., for Waimarino, was a passenger as far as Ohakunc by the Limited express this morning. Mr, W. J. Jordan, M.P., joined the train at Te Kuiti and came on to Auckland. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Leader of the New Zealand delegation to the Ottawa Conference, left San Francisco by the Monowai yesterday, and is expected to arrive in the Dominion on September 19. Mr. F. Southgate, of the staff of the Railway Department, and formerly of Masterton, has received notice of his transfer to Auckland. Mr. Southgate was formerly a well-known "Wairarapa Rugby representative player. Mr. L, Rowntree, who for several years has been assistant manager at Auckland for the Charles Haiues Advertising Agency, Limited, was, on the eve of his departure for Wellington, where lie has been transferred on promotion to head office, presented with a set of pipes and a tobacco pouch by his fellow members of the staff.
