SUNDAY PICTURES.
WHOLE OF FUNDS FOR
CHARITY.
NBWMAERET COUNCIL'S WORK,
Discussing the question of Sunday pictures in Newmarket, the town clerk, Mr. .Wilson, said to-day that all the funds fronr tfie entertainment last Sunday ; had been handed over to him by Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd., the proprietors' of ..the local picture theatre. "We feel very keenly in this matter of Sunday picture entertainment," said Mr. Wilson, "and do not think that the police should have interfered as they did. The • Act deliberately states that where Sunday pictures are for charitable purposes, local bodies have the authority to grant permission for, this purpose to picture theatre- proprietors' within their own bor, ough." The matter was at present in the hands'Of the borough solicitor for an opinion as to what course the council should adopt in. the future. ,"In administering the charity," eaid Mr., Wilson, "we issue ration tickets to applicants for meat, groceries and coal, who present the orders to particular tradesmen named by the council. The goods are supplied to the applicants by these tradesmen, who then come to the council with the orders for payment." Sometimes the method of administering the charity was varied, clothes, etc., for the. children of poor people being provided instefed of rations. This was taking some. of,.the burden from the Hospital and Unemployment Boards.
