DAFFODIL DAY.

STREET APPEAL TO-MORROW.

If the general public make a generous response on the occasion of the annual Daffodil Day street collection, to be held to-morrow, one at least of the three deserving organisations concerned will receive help now greatly needed. Thie is the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, which has worked for almost 40 years for the betterment of conditions of women and children in the community. The money received will be shared by the society and the Victoria League and the Navy League.

The society in its first year of operation—lß93—dealt with 61, cases. Last year nearly 600 new cases alone were brought to its notice. These entailed 4395 office interviews and, in addition, 1724 personal visits to private homes, institutions, etc., for the purpose of obtaining first-hand information in regard to reported cases of cruelty, desertion, domestic and other troubles. The inspector furthermore paid 93 visits to the Courts.

Notwithstanding this undoubted good work, the society's finances are now seriously impaired, and in 1931 it was necessary for the first time to draw upon the reserve capital.. For these reasons and because of the good work that the society is doing the society hopes the public will make an earnest attempt to'contribute as much as possible to the funds. Among the deserving objects which have benefited in the past, by the Victoria League's Daffodil Day appeal are the (St. John Ambulance, kindergartens, unemployment funds, Young Citizens' League,. hospital cots, fieate in soldiers' cemeteries, backblock book fund, Boy Scouts, Women's Mutual Aid, Girl Guides and Plunket Society. Miss J. Mowbray, the veteran worker for young people's organisations, will Tiead the collectors to-morrow.
