INCREASED RETURNS.

YIELD FROM CUSTOMS.

HIGHEST FOR 22 MONTHS

Not since October,' 1930, has Customs revenue yielded so much as was collected last month, when receipts totalled £189,052. This brings the total for the first eight months of this year to £1,302,945, as compared with £058,086 for the same period of last year. La-st month's Customs revenue was £70,071 more than was collected in August of last year, while motor spirit taxation yielded £35,942, as compared with £30,349 in August of last year. Tyre duty, however, returned only £1302, as compared with £2112 during the uune month of 1031. The total revenue from all three sources amounted to £220,350 for August and £1,(518,848 for the months, as compared with £151,442 and £1,313,015 for the corresponding periods of 'ast year. Excise collected on beer during this year has also been considerably in excess of what it was in 1931. Last month's return was £10,492, as compared with £7304 in the previous August, while the total for eight months is £80,041, which is £17,041 more tha:i was collected in the same period last year. j Detailed returns for laet month, com-j pared with August, 1931, are: — 1932. 1931.
