STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

A PROMISING 'CHASER. When schooled over the steeplechase course at Ellerslie during the week-end Haakon jumped much better than he did the previous week, and, taken aU round, his effort was very encouraging. Considering the limited amount of experience he has had, Haakon displays more than average promise as a jumper and he is likely to give a good account of himself in hunters' events at the Takapuna meeting. RELATED TO LADY'S BOY. Lady Winifrede, the half-sister to Lady's Boy, by Catmint, displayed a lot of speed over three furlongs a few-mornings ago at headquarters. There is no doubt regarding this mare's galloping ability, and it slie trains on correctly she will be hard to beat in hack sprint company during the current season. She has just been taken up again after a lengthy spell and may require a race or two before being seen at her best. . LIKELY TO SHOW UP. On several occasions last season Cargen showed useful form over the battens, and if in anything approaching his best condition he should, give,a good account of himself in the Hunters' Hurdles at Ellerslie next yeek. The "Quin Abbey gelding has ,dofie a fair amount' of hunting during the winter months, and though be has not raced for some time he should be forward enough-; to run - out a mile and a half journey.' . .' : ? GAY COCKADE'S PROGRESS. The Jellicoe Handicap candidate Gay Cockade is hitting out as well as ever in big work at Ellerslie and is in the right condition to begin the new racing season. This horse comes on very fast with a few solid gallops, and by the time the Pakuranga meeting arrives he will be quite ready to race. Gay Cockade ran third in the Jellicoe Handicap twelve months ago, and if'the going is favourable another good effort can be expected of him. HUNT CUP CANDIDATE. Good reports are to hand concerning Mashoor, who is getting through a solid preparation at Takanini in view of his Pakuranga Hunt Cup contest. The Lucullus gelding is a bold jumper over steeplechase country and should show up against the class he will be meeting at Ellerslie next week. Mashoor beat several promising jumpers when he won the Hunters' Hurdles at the last Great Northern meeting, and on that form is entitled to respect in any event confined to hunters.

' WILL HAVE JO SHOW IMPROVEMENT. • The Cambridge sprinter Chromadyne is due to have his first run in the new season at the Pakuranga meeting, where he claims an engagement in the Dunedin Handicap. Although the big Quin Abbey gelding beat a select field of sprinters in the Huia Handicap at the Auckland Easter meeting, his form in the interim has been very disappointing. Judged on his efforts during the past twelve months, Chromadyne does not appear to be racing as generously as he did earlier an his career. Consequently, he will need to show some improvement before the public will be anxious to' support him with any degree of confidence. WON AT FIRST ATTEMPT. When Platina led the field home in the View Halloa Steeplechase at the Eangitikei Hunt meeting last month she was making her first public appearance in a jumping event, and her display was encouraging for a novice. The half-sister to Otairi is engaged in the Hunt Cup at the Pakuranga meeting, and if brought to Ellerslie to contest that event she is likely to command a fair measure of support. This, mare can muster up a lot of pace on the'-flat, and now that she has shown herself- capable of negotiating < steeplechase •country - a good'.future should be in store far her.
