ALFRED.
(Hy Alma \Vynu, Queen Street, Waihi; aged 14.) Alfred and I are inseparable companions. I never go anywhere without Alfred, and Alfred never goes anywhere without me. A dog? I hear you ask. No, Alfred is not a dog. Neither is he a cat, a parrot, a guinea pig, or a canary. Alfred, to be correct, is my brother. Of course, if he knew I was'writing this there would be ructions-—and vcingeanco,' swift and sure. But I have eluded him, and this is a tribute to my brain. I have slipped behind the big rhododendron tree on the lawn. At tirst I did not know how to escape him, for he persisted in following me about and showing me a silly old ship he was carving, which, I kept telling him at intervals, didn't look the least like a ship, and probably neves' would. Once I thought desperately "1" the coal cellar, but rejected the thought. Then, when lie went back to the woodshed to procure a nail, I fled. I enpret after a time, when he gets tired of hunting for me, he'll go off in high dudgeon and cut paper up all over the sitting room. However, lam straying from the subject.. Alfred recently evinced u great love of the mystery novel. Where - ever I went I would come across him reading sonic book such as "The Ghost of Guzzling Grange," or "The Sign of the Yellow Claw,'' or even "The Castle of
