THE RANGER SINGLE PUSHER MONOPLANE. DETAILS OF CONSTRUCTION. The Ranger Single Pusher Monoplane is something different from the usual type of model aeroplane, but as flights of over two minutes' duration have been done with this model there is little doubt but that it will prove interesting to model aeroplane builders. It is perhaps the simplest of all good flying models to build. If you follow the instructions you will have no trouble producing a contest winner. MATERIALS. Required. A. Main spar, hollow, with capping piece, Balsa 14 x J x 4 •• • • 1 B. Propeller. Cut diagonally (Scotsman). Balsa 5 s 1J s I 1 C. Propeller bearing, aluminium 1 D. Propeller spindle, 24 s.w.g. spring steel wirt 1 E. Front rubber hook, 24 s.w.g. spring steel wire 1 F. "S" hook 24 si.w.g. spring steel wire 1 FX Can or guide, 24 s.w.g., spring steel wire 1 Gl, G2. Wing clips, 24 s.w.g. spring steel wire 2 HI, H2. Elevator clips, 24 s.w.g. spring steel vire ' 2 I. Elevator spar, x 3-32 sq. Balsa 1 J. Wing spars, 10 x 1-16 sq. Balsa 4 K. Wing ribs, 3 x 1-1(5 sq. Balsa . 7 L. Elevator spars, 6 x 1-16 sq. Balsa 2 M. Elevator ribs, 2 x 1-16 sq. i Balsa 5
The Main Spar A.—Smooth this up with fine glasspaper and cement the capping pieces into place. Now cement the elevator boom " I" into one end and cement and bind the propeller bearing " C " on the other. Fit the can " F1 " and front rubber hook " E" by pushing into the Balsa and cementing as shown in fig. 1. The Main Wing. —Maki a full-size drawing of your main wing on a piece . ..of smooth board and pin the spars " J " r lnto place, giving a sweep-back, as shown in fig. 2. Now cement the ribs
"K" into place, but do not put in the centre rib. When the two halves are dry, elevate the end three inches above the centre, as shown in fig. 3. Cement the ends of the spars together and fit the centre rib. Now cement the wing clips "G1 " and " G2." Cover each half separately with Japanese tissue paper. Ordinary adhesive will do, but strong dope makes a neater job. Note: None of the paper surfaces are doped. The Elevator.—Fig. 4. The elevator is made up in a similar fashion to the wing, there being a considerable dihedral, as shown in fig. 5, but no sweep-back. Cover with Japanese tissue. The Propeller.—Cement your diagonally cut block, Fig. 8, in the manner shown in Fig. 9, and carve away until the propeller is not over l-Bin thick at the centre and tapers to about l-32in at the tips. Insert the propeller spindle " D." Bend to a U shape and cement into place. Don't forget that the curving blades and the propeller should push the machine forward when rotating. Assembling.—Both the elevator and the, main wing can be adjusted by moving clips up and down the main spar. However, the position is lest found 'by actual flight. Slip two collets, or small beads, between the propeller and the aluminium propeller bearing " C,*' and insert the propeller spindle through the bearing. Now loop oil six strands of l-Bin wide duration rubber, threading it through the can and fixing the S hook " F " at the front. If you have a winder the procedure is as follows: Fit the small loop of the S hook into your winder, get someone to
hold your propeller, and stretch the .rubber out to about twice its normal length. In this way easily 900 turns can be crammed on if rubber lubricant is used. Xake the S hook off the winder and slip it on to the rubber hook " E." Now launch the 'plane gently down-wind. IS it goes up and. stalls, move the wing back. Final adjustment can only be : found with experience. A kit sei« containing all the materials necessary ror building the Ranger Single Pusher Monoplane may be obtained by sending a<- postal note for 2/ to " Propell-er," c/o " Auckland Star."
