PRIVATE HOTEL EMPLOYEES.
QUESTION OF NEW AWARD. EMPLOYEES REJECT CLAIMS. Private liotel workers' amended claims as submitted to the employers at the meeting of the Conciliation Council on Thursday were rejected and the case now. stands adjourned, until the ,16th instant. Rates of pay were proposed which represented an all-round of 10 per cent or the award wage. This, to-, gether with the unemployment wage lax, made a reduction in wages to the workers engaged in private hotels of 15 per cent since the last award was made. In view of the low rate of pay and the casualness of the employment and the seasonal work to which these employees are subject the wacres desired were thought to be reasonable. The claim stated that if the conditions as to the new rates of pay were, favourably considered by the employers, the representatives of the employees would be will ins? to give favourable consideration to other conditions of employment contained in the employers' claim. With reference to the classification proposed by the employers, the clairn stated that this would mean the displacement of a great number of the adult workers in private hotels by juvenile workers at a much lower rate.. It was also stated that 80 per cent of the workers covered by the award were females.
