DEVONPORT DOMAIN.

NO CHANGE OF NAME. "CHELTENHAM PARK" SUGGESTED. A suggestion that the portion of Dcvonport Domain on which the cricket ground-is situated should in future be •known as Cheltenham Park, was discussed last evening at a meeting of the local borough council, but when put to the vote the proposal was defeated. The Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, said the change had been suggested by Dr. H. C. Bennett, who had pointed out that -proposed new title would be distinctive, and would serve to differentiate between other reserves in the borough. "There is something to be said in favour of that view," remarked Mr. Meikle. "After all, the area, near the council 'chambers is part of the domain, and so,for that matter, is Mount Victoria. All our reserves are parts of the area controlled by the Domain Board."

The suggested change was supported by Mr. H. J. Hutehiiigs and Mr. A. S. Player. "All the other.parks in the borough have distinctive names," said Ml - . Hutehings. "There is Ngataringa Park at Stanley Bay, Melrose Park, and so on. I think the change would be an excellent plan."

Strong opposition to the proposal was voiced by Mr: C. Farquharson. "Devonport Domain has always been known by that title," he said, "and it would be a great mistake to alter it. There has never been the slightest confusion regarding the name, and I am certain the great majority of residents would be against a change."

Mr. E. H. Littlo agreed. "It isn't wise to change names unless there is duplication," he said. "Some years ago the names of certain streets in the borough were altered, but I notice we have had to place the old names under the new on the signposts."

The proposal was defeated by six votes to three.
