THAMES LOANS.

QUESTION OF AUTHORITY.

STATEMENT BY MR. FORBES.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, Wednesday.

The acting Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, stated to-day that his attention had been drawn to the Press statement suggesting that information be obtained whether the Local Government Loans Board had sanctioned the raising of any loans by the Thames ,Borough Council or the Thames Harbour Board. ... Mr. Forbes remarked that with two exceptions which had been referred to, all loans for those two local authorities were authorised to be raised before the Local Government Loans Board commenced to function. Soon after the Local Government Loans Board Act, 1926, came into operation. On April 1, 1927, the Loans Board approved of two 10 ner cent supplementary loans, authorised under section 19 of the Local Bodies Loans Act, 1926, for completing loan works previously authorised by a poll of ratepayers.
