RATANAITE WINS.
SOUTHERN MAORI ELECTION. MAJORITY OF 241 VOTES. COALITION NOMINEE SECOND. (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. By a majority of 211 votes, Mr. Eruera Tihema Tirikatene, independent Eatana candidate, was returned as member for the Southern Maori electorate at the byelection to-day, necessitated by the death of Mr. T. Makitanara, the former Government member. Mr. William To Ihoka Parata, the official Coalition candidate, filled second place. Officially there were six candidates, but a few days ago one, Mr. Wireinu Mihaka, announced his retirement. However, once a candidate is nominated he must go to the poll. Details of the voting are: — Eruera Tihema Tirikatene (Indcpendent Eatana) • • 4 - u William Te Ihoka Parata (Ofhcial Coalition) ]°f Peter Macdonald (Independent) . 1-ii Joseph Beaton (Independent Coalitionist) Tame Kaiporolm Bragg (Independent Reform) • • ■■ ■ Wircmu Mihaka (Independent Coalitionist) Majority for Tirikatene 241 The total number of votes was 950. The Southern Maori electorate includes the whole of the South Island and Stewart Island.
