RACING STATISTICS.
TAKANINI'S. GOOD RECORD. EIGHTY-ONE WINNERS. J. L. GRAY ON" TOP. For the number of horses trained at Takanini, this centre must rank as one of the foremost in the Dominion for the past season in regard to the races and stake money won. St. Ames' victory at Gisborne on Saturday was the last event won by a Takanini horse for the season, this win bringing the aggregate to 81, a most satisfactory total, in view of the fact that in compiling such a good tally only seven trainers participated in the honours.
J. L. Gray headed the list with 20 wins, 14 seconds and six thirds, and £6025 in stakes, while P. E. Pope, the runner-up, had 17 wins, 22 seconds, 11 thirds and £4175 in stakes. J. T. Jamieson's stable was credited with 17 wins 12 seconds, 14 thirds and £3410 in stakes. Another trainer to do well was F. Smith, who finished the season with 10 wins, eight seconds, four thirds and £1645 in stakes.
The total of 81 wins, 62 seconds and 47 thirds, with £16,740 in stakes establishes a new record for Takanini, and it is interesting to note the progress made during the last four seasons.
In the 1928-29 season the result was 35 wins, 35 seconds, 34 thirds, bringing in £8705 in stakes. The 1929-30 season was productive of 59 winners, 49 seconds and 47 thirds, with £18,293 in stakes, while in 1930-31 there were 75 winners, 63 seconds, 48 thirds and £20,320 in stakes. These statistics do not include Australian winnings, which, in the last few seasons, have amounted to a substantial figure.
Many noted performers have been prepared here, and several of those still fresh in our minds are Eaglet, the best filly of her age as a three-year-old; High Finance and Polyxena, two good sprinters; In the Shade, a handicap horse; Prince Humphrey, an Australian Derby winner; Amnion Ri and Bronze Eagle, both Great Northern Derby winners, and Speedmint, a Great Northern Oaks winner. •The following list shows the wins and placings during last season, and deals with the trainers, and the performances of horses having won over £250 in stakes:— Wlnq.
