UNEMPLOYMENT FUNDS.
COUNTRY DISSATISFIED. " MONEY SQUANDERED." TEN-ACRE SCHEME DENOUNCED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. The manner of the disbursement of unemployed funds, and the ten-acre scheme were the subjects of trenchant criticism at a meeting of the Borough Council last evening. Mr. J. J. Callaghan said all representations made by Waihi regarding the stand-down week and reduced allocations had borne no fruit. There was great dissatisfaction with the manner in which the unemployment money was being spent, particularly in regard to the ten-acre scheme. No improvement had followed the increasing of the tax from 3d to 1/. He considered that the money had been squandered in a scheme that was outside legitimate bounds. Mr. A. E. Robinson said the whole country was making similar protests, and while he believed the Unemployment Board had no further funds in hand there was little doubt that money had been squandered in a scheme that was foredoomed to failure.
After further discussion it was decided to appoint a committee of three to consider what steps should be taken with a view to making a united protest, particularly ill regard to the differential treatment as between town and country areas.
