HOME TREATMENT.
SLIMMING.
(By PERITUS.)
There are many women, young and old, who, quite apart from fashion in figure and dress, would be glad to lose weight and size before the hot weather comes round again. Starvation and aperient salts will reduce weight, certainly, but equally there will be a reduction in strength and possibly also in health. 'An American authority has worked out a system of complicated gymnastics — walking or running would act quite as well if as thoroughly and regularly indulged in—combined with deep breathing exercises twice daily (50 deep inspirations each time), flushing the body with water (drinking seven pints in 24 hours), cold or tepid showers, normal rests (eight hours), and a fairly strict vegetarian diet, including six tablespoonfuls of bran each day. This has been proved efficient, reducing up to 31b weekly, but like all systems it really needs supervision. It is so natural to become: a backslider, but if you have the self-control and courage I have no doubt this system succeeds. Mine is easier, and requires less selfdenial. You may live as always, except that you must walk four miles or more daily, and repeat some physical move-
ments which cause perspiration, and then sponge with tepid water afterwards, followed by a hard rub with a rough toweL Drink water, weak tea, skim-milk and water. Take no sugar, sweets, cakes, biscuits, pastry or grain foods of any kind. No thick soups or gravies. No eels, salmon or sardines. No pork or duck, and preferably no alcohol, no bread, little potato. Eat thin soups, fish, poultry, lean meat, game, eggs, fruit and vegetables, rusks or crisp toast, butter (moderation) junket, custard (real). Let there be no more than three regular meals daily, and nothing but weak tea or water between meals.
To modify this formula is to modify its action, which can bo increased by taking one or two grains of thyroid gland daily.
Here, condensed, are two systems—one strict and one fairly easy, and both tried, tested and approved. It is necessary to measure bust, waist and abdomen once weekly. When weighing, always wear the same clothing (or none), and keep a careful record.
