CORNER FOR BUSY BEES

RIBBED SOCKS. FOR THE FIVE-YEAR-OLD.

(Conducted by TINKERBELL.)

Dear Girls,— This week we are going to try knitting socks. I know the popular belief is that they are ever so hard to make, but really anyone who is moderately good at knitting should experience no difficulty in making the ribbed socks illustrated in this column. They are size 4, and to make them you will require 2oz Scotch fingering 3-ply wool. No. 14 knitting needles, with points at both ends, are needed.

Knit the first 16 stitches of the round, slip the last 14 stitches on to he other end of the same needle. These stitches are for the heel. Divide ill the other stitches on to two needles, 'saving them for the instep. On the :ieel stitches (always slipping the first titch) purl 30, turn; knit 29, turn; Jurl 28, turn; knit 27, turn. Con--tnue in this manner until nine stitches are left at each side of the heel (the ast row will be purl 12) then turn. *nit 12, take up the right-hand side ->( the loop just before the 13th stitch nd knit the two stitches together preventing a hole), turn, 1.3, take up the loop just before :e 14th stitch and purl the two osfether. Continue in this manner, •orking one extra stitch on to each ow until all the 30 stitches are on one ow again (the last row will be a purl ow). Knit back 15 stitches to comolete the heel. Slip the 30 instep titches on to one needle. Taking a ■pare needle, knit the remaining 15 .fitches of the heel and knit up two stitches at the side of the heel. With a second needle work in rib on the instep -.titches; with a third needle knit up :wo stitches at the side of the heel, and he other 15 heel stitches. Work one ound, knitting the first and third eedles plain and the second need'ie in ib. In the next round decrease for Se instep as follows:— Knit to the last three stitches of the vst needle, knit two tc.-jethei-, knit ne. Work the second needle in rib vithout shaping. On the third needle 'init one, knit two together through the -ack of the loops. Knit to end >f the needle. Repeat the last two -ounds twice. Work 49 rounds with shaping, knitp.r the first , ! third needles plain and the second needle in rib. In the last round decrease two -stitches on the second needle. Commence the shaping for the toe as follows:— Knit to the last three stitches of the first needle, knit two together, knit one. On the second needle lenic one, knit two together through Che back of the loops, knit plain to the hist throe stitches, knit two toge'vher, knk c -ie. On the third nsedle knit oaf., knit two '.■mother through the back o? the loops, knit to end of needie. Work two rounds in plain without shap.->.-:. Repeat all these inslruci-cns from t ; ic coromenoe-Ton! of the shaping nf the !r, c until only 23 stitches remain in the round. Knit the stitches on the first needle en to the third. Either cast off stitches from tlie two needles together or graft the stitches. If possible, girls, you shoulJ have someone to help you when knitting the heel, as this usually proves the stumbling block for those who are making their first pair of socks.
