THE WEEK'S WORK. THE FLOWER GARDEN. Hollyhock seeds sown in heat now will flower at the beginning of autumn. „ _ Carnation seed sown now should produce plants that will flower in late summer. Cuttings of Chrysanthemums can be taken from now on. Rose planting and pruning can be done. This is the time to plant most varieties of Liliums. Hand weed between Anemones and Ranunculi. The soil between the plants should be stirred. Planting of many spring and summer flowering plants can be done. Avoid planting if soil is too wet. The loss of a day or two does not make much difference at this time of the year. Primroses, Polyanthus. Pentstemor.s and Lobelias can be planted. Plant hedges, evergreen trees and shrubs. Make new paths, and any alterations to bed or borders should be done as scon as possible. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. No time should be lost in getting all vacant plots dug over and ready for cropping. u> The space between crops and also close around fruit trees should be dug over. Early planted Potatoes should be earthed up as soon as the tops are a few inches above: ground. Place Potato sees in boxes to sprout before planting. The thorough preparation of the soil is essential to obtain a good crop of Potatoes. Make new plantings of Rhubarb. Topdresa and well manure existing beds. Make plantings of Shallots, Fotato Onions and Garlic. Good soil and cultivation are required. Plantings of Horseradish should be made yearly, the previous year s planting being trenched out. THE GREENHOUSE. Thoroughly clean all inside woodwork and glass. Overhaul any climbers, pruning and tying where required. Clean away all weak rubbish and any insect pests. Thoroughly wash or fumigate the house with a disinfecting solution or an insecticide. Prepare boxes and labels for seed sowing. Seeds of Begonias, Gloxinias, Lobelia and several half-hardy plants can be sown. Care will be needed in the watering. Begonia and Gloxinia bulbs in store or in pots should be brought out and cleaned in readiness for starting.
