UNEMPLOYED BOYS.
STRONG COMMITTEES FORMED MONEY URGENTLY NEEDED. SEVERAL DONATIONS RECEIVED. Representatives of the various organir sations interested in the problem of - unemployment among boys and youths - attended a meeting yesterday afternoon in the Diocesan Office, over which Mr. N. G. Gribble, president of the Farm and City Careers Bureau, presided. Strong and representative sub-committees were formed. The meeting was attended by tho Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, Archbishop Avcrill, Bishop Liston and Mr. A. E. Anscll, M.P. It was decided to call the committee the Auckland Boys' Employment Committee. The meeting was tho result of the recent meeting in the Town Hall. "What the conmiittoo urgently needs is money," said Mr. Gribble, "and I think the linancc committee should meet at once. The A. and P. Association lias given a generous donation of £250, Archbishop Averill and Bishop Liston have each given £.30, the Rotary Club £20, and the Chamber of Commerce lias promised to give £50 on certain conditions. Others have said they will give when the committee is ready, and wo hope to be given £500 by tho Auckland City Council. My executive had £5000 in view as the amount required for the handling of boys in the city." Mr. W. F. O'Donnell explained that it would probably take about £4 to fit a boy out to go on a farm, and the executive believed that it would need about £5000 for the first twelve months. Of course, some of the boya would have reasonable equipment, and it would cost probably only £1 to send thorn on to a farm, but it might be found necessary to epend £5 on others. Outlining the work which had to be handled, Mr. Gribble said that the bureau had had more applications from the country than they could deal with at present. Thirty boys had been written to by the bureau during the last fortnight. They had been told, that jobs on farms had been found for them, but the majority would not respond, A position such as that was farcical. Many boys would not go into the country. "It is most important that we do something for these boys immediately/' eaid Archbishop Averill. "Can't we do something now to prevent these boys getting into a state of mind where they will not go into the country?" A member of the committed mentioned the case of a boy who had been sent out to a farmer, and had left because the place was most undesirable. Mr, Gribble replied that when an application for a boy was received, the bureau made as many inquiries about the farmer as it could. That phase would be better looked after in the future. The following sub-committees were appointed:-^-
