PROBATION ABUSED.
"DRUNKEN WASTER" GAOLEIO. IMPOSED ON FRIEND. "This man is a drunken waster and nothing more caii be. done for him," Said the probation officer, Mf t W. J. Campbell, about Ignatius Patrick Corbett, agfed 43, a cook, who pleaded guilty at the Police Court thie morning to a charge .oi failing to comply with the ternw. and conditions of his release on probation. Corbett. admitted a further charge of obtaining £5 from William John Hickey by means of a valueless cheque on December 14, Id3l. Detective Sergeant Kelly eaid Corbett came to Auckland to look for work oft December 12 last yean-In the bar of an hotel he met the licensee, whom he had known for 14 years. He told the licensee that he had Come to Auckland oa holidays, and the licensee asked him to etay at the hotel as his guest. Two days later Corbett told the licensee that he was leaving for Chrietchiifch and got Mm to cash a cheque for £5. The cheque -was returned, marked "No account." After giving particulars Or accused's previous offences, Mr. Kelly eaid: "Ho has never tried to do any good fof himself or any of his family, and at present there are four of his children in the care of the State. Arrears for maintenance now amount to £235." The magistrate told Corbett that he had not appreciated the many opportuni ■ ties given him in the past, and sentenced him to 12 months* reformative detention. . •
