NO EXCUSE FOB THEFT,
OFFENDER SENT TO BORSTAL.
A young man, John Leslie Floraiice, who pleaded guilty to charges of theft, breaking and entering and theft, and attempting to break mid outer ;i sho;i with intent to commit a crime, four charges in all, was committed to the Borstal Institute for a period inn exceeding two years, by Mr. Justice Herdman this morning. Counsel for Florence said the latter had been earning his own living since he was ]-l years of age, and lie did not seem to have been in any very serious trouble till this year. Unfortunately for liim hi-; first ciiine was successful financially, and he made a haul of £10, which led him to commit the other offences. Counsel isked that the Court should not impose a heavy sentence, but one sufficient to check the prisoner, who was on the threshold of a career of crime, and turn him into a decent citizen. His Honor said that altluHlgh the prisoner had been out of work, unemployment no excuse for stealing. The prisoner iiad been before the Court in 1020.
