ALL BLACKS.

WON'T TAKE "DUMMY"

Sporting Parson's Comment on N.Z. Footballers. NEVER TAKE THEM LIGHTLY. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 2 p.m.) BRISBANE, this day. Although a fully qualified minister of religion, G. V, Portus (New South Wales), the Australian Rugby selector, prefers plain "mister," or better still "Jerry." He is a "good mixer," and a ready wit. Few suspect that he can claim the title Avhich usually goes with pious, staid personalities. A sample of his wit is evidenced by the following remarks when discussing the second Test match chances: —"You can never take an All Black side lightly. These fellows play with a football in their cradles. Jove, that must be why they won't take the 'dummy!' I never thought of that before." Discissing the team further, he said: "I have watched every team since the war, and never saw a set of forwards back up better than this lot. The backs are speedy, cunning and opportunist." Mr. H. Penwill (Victoria), another Australian selector, declares that the New Zealanders have wonderfully improved.

Allen and Allom bowled well, but the slow bowlers (Peebles and Brown) were disappointing. Paynter's batting was unimpressive. Owing to rain there was no play in the India v. Durham game.
