OBITUARY.

LATE LIEUT.-COLONEL A. BARTLETT The. funeral of Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Bartlctt on Tuesday afternoon was largely attended. The Rev. W. \V. Avery conducted the service at the residence at Birkdale, and also at the Waikumete Cemetery, where the remains were cremated.

The Masonic fraternity was widely represented. Forty-two years ago deceased had the unique distinction of being th o first candidate initiated into Lodge Ara No. 1, which was the first lodge formed under the New Zealand Constitution of Freemasons. Later ho was the Worshipful Master of that Lodgo for two years, in 1804 and 150.5, and subsequently was the secretary for several years. In 1897 he was Provincial Grand Master and in 1903 attained to the high office of Deputy Grand Master for New Zealand.

Officers of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand present included Most Worshipful Brothers Oliver Nicholson and Thompson, Right Worshipful Brothers W. R. T. Leighton, W. Mason and M. A. Benney, and Worshipful Brother Arch. Burns. The Worshipful Master, Brother Fred Moore, Brother Moiling, the immediate Past Master, and the brethren of Ara Lodge No. 1, and the Worshipful Master, Brother H. Dowsing, with Brother J. Dickson, Past Master, and tho brethren of Onewa Lodge, No. 182, also attended, besides craftsmen belonging to various other lodges. Tho 3rd Auckland Infantry Regiment (Countess of Ranfurly's Own), formerly commanded by deceased, was represented by Lieutenant H. G. Wooller, Ist Battalion, while Colonel J. E. Duigan, D.5.0., Officer Commanding Auckland Headquarters, was represented by Captain C. J. Duff. Others present included Messrs. W. Wallace, chairman, and W. K. Howitt, of the Auckland Hospital Board, and the medical superintendent, Dr. J. W. Craven, and several members of local bodies and societies with which the deceased had been associated.
