SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The dance held by the Glenbrook Tennis Club at Waiuku was well attended. Excellent music for old-time and modern dances was played by Mrs. Mitchell and Master L. Bellingham (piano), and Mr. E. McKinney and Mr. J. Bellingham (violin). The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss C. McKinney and Mr. Don Dromgool.

In spite of the wet weather on Saturday evening an enjoyable dance was held in the Kumeu Hall, under the auspices of the Wharepai and Haeremai Oddfellows. Visitors from the surrounding lodges were in attendance, including Waimauku, Hobsonville, Taupaki and Auckland. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Jurakvich and Mr. J. Lynch, and a spot waltz by Miss M. Goldstone and Mr. J. Mack.

The girls' branch 'of the Victoria League held their monthly bridge party at the Evelyn Firth Home for Returned Soldiers on Wednesday afternoon. Prizes were won by Mr. Gordon and Mr. Turpin. Among the players were: Mrs. Ewen, Miss W. Kent (convener), Misses Kathleen Aickin, Darrie Heather, Norah Friedlander, Prosser, Berniee Ogilvie and Marshall.

A bridge party, at which Mr. HarrisonGregory was hostess, was held at the Lyceum Club yesterday afternoon. The guests, met in the lounge, which was beautifully decorated with howls of early spring flowers, and Mrs. HarrisonGregory received in a coat of bottle green, trimmed with squirrel fur and a green hat to match. Miss .Violet Har-rison-Gregory was in a vieux rose tweed ensemble with rose coloured hat. Among the players were: Mesdames G. Court, J. Spinley, Norman Watson, H. Nash, R. F. Ward, H. Ferguson, Herman, W. J. Armstrong, W. W. Meek, Misses Molly Bailey, L. de Renzy, McGlashan, M. Fouhy, O'Leary, Joy Bartley, Vera Ziman, Berta Carr, and Noel Self.

A social evening was given on Tuesday night at the Sailors' Mission, Port Buildings, when members of the crew of the Parracombe were entertained by the Auckland branch of the British Sailors' Society. Items were rendered by a party under Mrs. T. Clark, comprising Mrs. Rattray, Miss Burk and Mrs. Dupree. Musical items were given by Mrs. Rattray and Miss Burk, and recitations by Mrs. Dupree and Mrs. Clark. Musical numbers were also given by Mr. Mead on the concertina. Other items were given by members'of the crew of the Parracombe, and a duet by Messrs. W. L. and J. C. Alliott, who also gave items on their ukuleles. Solos were given'by Mr. J. Murphy and Master Garrick. The pianist for the evening was Miss J. Webb.' The evening closed with a speech by Mr. T. Clark on behalf of the society.

On Wednesday evening the Thames Girls' Club held their monthly reunion in the social room, Druids' Hall, Newton. The president, Mrs. P. McGregor, presided, and the evening, which took the form of a grocery evening, was a pronounced success. A large number of jjarcels of food were collected and given to the St. John Ambulance district nurses for distribution among .distressed families. An enjoyable programme was as follows: Humorous items and recitation, by Mrs. Burnett; duoloffite, Mr. and Mrs. Burnett; songs, Miss Yeoman; ' duologue, Miss Blott and Mr. Burnett; duet, Mrs. White and Mrs. Burnett; and sketch, by Mrs. White and Mrs. Burnett.

The Tauranga Amateur Operatic Social Club's second social of the:sposon was held at flic Town Hall, Mr. L. Bloor and Mrs. O'Biinn actin? PS host and hostess. After dancing in the first half of the cvenintr, the members of the club were entertained by the following: Miss M. Pomerov. songs; Miss' Darramrh, recitations: Mr. T. The drama circle of the Overseas League met last night, when a play,

"The Improper Duchess," by .lames B. Fagnn, was read. The play ran for a long season in London last year, and is full of wit and humour.- The part of the Duchess of Tann \v:is read by Miss Alsia I'lumincr, while Mr. Dennis Johns, producer, played the part of Augustus X., King of Poldavia.

The second of a series of social afternoons in connection with the Mount Albert Croquet Club was held in the bowling pavilion on Tuesday. The bridge and the hidden number prizewinners Were: Mesdames Maxwell, Preston, Blue and Beck. Among those'present were: Mesdamcs.Forsyth, Maxwell, Robertson, Angus, Ilnwko, Jury, Dawson, Thomas, Gray, Out ram, Hcrspool, Cooper, Powley, Bewes, Mcßride, Blake, Preston, B. Harbutt, Good, Ellis, Sneddon, Breckon, G. Jmpey, J. Johnson, A. Quinlan, P. Smith, D. Grace, Tindle, J. Couper, W. Watson, Cuthbert, Lowe, Burke, Beck, Partington, Towniey, D'Eath, Sharp, Fisher, Fountain, Bell, Craddoek, R. Wilkinson, Whitfield, E. McXamara, F. . Taylor, C. Richards, Graham, Young, Misses J. and M. Lambc.

An At Home was given by Mrs. L. Horroeks on Wednesday afternoon at her residence, Saltburn Road, Milfoid, for those belonging to St. George's Women's Guild. Gifts were received for the stalls of the proposed bazaar to be held later in the season, the parcels being opened by Mrs. Morgan Richards, the president of the guild. Sirs. Horroeks received her guests wearing navy marocain and lace. She was assisted in her duties as hostess by Mrs. Mahon, Mrs. • John Frater and Miss Ni Horroeks. Competitions were arranged, the winners being Mesdames Le Clere, Ewing and Hamilton. Amongst 'tho guests were: Mesdames Richards, Hanna, Doul, Crcra, Le Clere, J, Steel, Gordon, Ewing, O. Boak, Leyden, Hamilton, G. Nicks, Baldwin, G. Howie, Shaw, J. Buchanan, McMurtrie, and tho Misses Froude and Robinson.

A bridge party was held at "Beverley," the residence of Misses Bews, Huapai, in aid of the church funds, St. Chads', Huapai. The rooms were beautifully decorated with large bowls of pink roses and red-hot poker blooms. Miss A. Bews received her guests wearing a frock of black chenille, assisted by Miss M. E. Bews, who wore a frock of rose floral marocain. Among those present were: Mesdames I. Owtram, Rust, Meek, Harris, Lambden, Hill-Johnson (Helensville), Pym (Woodhill), Cooke, Swain, Cole, Currie, Nicholson, Brock (Helensville), Frost. Charters (Waimauku), Guy (Woodhill), Shutes, Swain, Birnie (Helensville), Meikle, Kemp, Nalder, Quarrie, Plummer (Helensville), Steele, Alexander. Fames (Helensville), Misses Watts (Waimauku), Cora Hill and Yule. The prize winners were Mrs. Quarrie, Miss M. Hill, Dr. Harris and Mr. Guy.
