CAUGHT IN FIRE.
— ——,»- CRIPPLE'S TRYING ORDEAL. NEIGHBOUR HEARS CRIES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, Wednesday. Unable through infirmity to leave his bed, an old man named Thompson hud a terrifying experience at Hinds, twelve miles from Ashburton, when his son's house -was burned last night. H© was alone in the house when the fire occurred, and his repeated, cries for assistance failed until the roam was burning and full of smoke. Then Mr. Arthur Hood, who was sleeping in a hut near by, heard the cries and rushed to the rescue.
Mr. Hood was driven bank several •times by thick emoke and blistering heat, tat finally entered the bedroom through a window. To get the crippled man out of bed and through the window was no easy task, but Mr. Hood managed it just in time. The house, which was 40 years old, was destroyed with its contents.
