WALKED OVER WHARF.
MISTAKE IN DARKNESS. TWO MEN FROM AUCKLAND. SAVED BY FOREST OFFICIAL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. Two men, who arrived at Whangamata this week with a draft of 80 men sent from Auckland for tree-planting, had a narrow escape from drowning shortly after their arrival. Only the timely action of a junior officer of the v State forest service prevented a tragedy. The boat did not arrive from Auckland till very late at night. Though the weather was fine it was very cold. The men soon landed on the wharf, but two of them mistook the direction to i the shore, and resounding splashes and loud cries announced to their astonished ' mates that they had walked over the ' wharf and fallen into the ice-cold water, which at that spot was fairly deep. One of the men was unable to swim, and as the tide was running swiftly, both were in danger of drowning. One of the officers of the Forest Service, without hesitation, jumped in and assisted both men to regain the shore. He was congratulated on all sides for , his pluck and presence of mind.
