Hopman Settles Frenchman In Straight Sets. AUSTRALIANS WIN DOUBLES. (Received 2 p.m.) PARIS, July 8. In the lawn tennis match between Australia and France Hopman defeated Lacoste in straight sets. The Frenchman was only a shadow of his former greatness, having lost the sting in his backhand. His length was uncertain. Results:— Hopman (Australia) beat Lacoste, 6—2, 6—2; Feret (France) beat Sproule, C—3, 6—l; Merlin (France) beat Clemenger, 6—4, B—6; Crawford and Hopman (Australia) beat Cochet and Merlin, 6— i, 7—5.
