CUTTING TULIP FLOWERS
An experiment carried out in Lincolnshire by the Bulb Research Committee to show the effect of non-cutting v. the cutting of flowers: Five varieties were used — William Copeland, Elizabeth, Clara Butt, Mrs. F. Sanders, and William Pitt. The'bulbs were planted in. duplicate plots, one for cutting, one for noncutting purposes. When lifting lime came round the bulbs were, carefully weighed and the percentage of increase noted. The returns from the non-cut plot were by far tlie heavier, proving to the satisfaction of the committee the detrimental effect of cutting the flowers for market. Not only were tlie increases in weight very much less in the case of the beds on which the flowers were cut, but very few of tlie larger sixes of bulbs were obtained. The attempt to use a stock of bulbs for both flowers and bulbs will result in deterioration of the stock and entail the necessity of the expense of new stock.
