Peto, the head of the women's department in the Metropolitan Police Force in London, has been raised to the rank of superintendent. * » • • Mr. and Mrs. Roscoc Smith, of Taumaruniii, who have been staying at Sayes Court, have left Wellington for an extended motor tour before returning home.

She intends returning to the city on Monday. • « * • Advico lias been received iti,Wellington that Miss Flora Murray, .holder of tho Sir William Hartley Scholarship at Edinburgh University during the last three years, has been successful in gaining tho degree of doctor of philosophy. • » • • Mjs. Leigh Hunt, England, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Leigh Hunt, who is a member of the 8.8.C. national chorus, left Wellington this week on their return to England by the Remuera, after an extended holiday in Xew Zealand. • • • • Dame Sybil Thorndike, on the eve of her departure from West Australia, was presented with a beautiful little leatherbound book by the president of the Australian Federation of Women Voters as a token of remembrance on behalf of the Federal organisation and the State body affiliated with it—the Women's Service Guilds of West Australia. • » * » Private advico was recently received that Miss Dorothea 2Corinan-Jones, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Norman-Jones, of Lower Hutt, has gained the Cambridge Tripos with firstclass honours in natural science. Miss Norman-Jones has been taking the medical course at Newnham College, Cambridge, and has completed her first and second M.B. examinations. .She now proposes to continue her studies at King's College Hospital, London,— (Manawatu "Times.") v • • • • A remarkable feat was achieved recently at the Sorbonne, when Mile. Lavaud, aged 28, who was born deaf and dumb, received her doctor of science degree, equivalent to the British M.A. Mile. Lavaud, the daughter of Madame Lavaud, who is the principal of a French college, by extraordinary perseverance has learned to speak as well as any normal person, although she is unable to conquer her deafness. She answered questions put to her by reading tho movements of the speaker's lips.
