MAN'S MEAN ACTION.
CAPITALISED ON FRIEND'S DEATH. COLLECTED MONEY FOR "WIFE." (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. "Thie is a particularly mean action you have perpetrated," said Mr. McNeil, S.XL, to Norman Eric Ence Hicks, a horse driver, aged 31, who appeared in the Police Court to-day on a charge of vagrancy, in that he imposed on private individuate by false representations. Hicks pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant Revell said while accused was engaged on relief work last May, a mate of his, named Leckie, died. Accused conceived the idea of collecting for a wreath, and he did copect a few shillings. He followed this up by going round the city collecting for Leckie'e wife and children, who did not exist. It was not known how much accused got in this way, but on his own admission he collected £5 15/.
Accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
