A surprise party was paid to Miss Lorell Corban, of Ridings Road, Remuera, on Saturday evening. Mrs. Corban wore a brocaded frock and coatee. A meeting of the Grey Lynn branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Wednesday afternoon in St. Columba Hall. Arrangements were made for a special drawing room afternoon to be held at tho residence of Mrs. Hyucs next month. A donation of old linen for medical dressings, collected by the union, was made (o the medical mission of the Newton Congregational Church.

On Saturday afternoon Miss L. Ripley wars entertained by a number of girl friends at a. luncheon party at the Domain Kiosk. The Tables were decorated with red and white carnations. Madame Mabel Milno addressed a gathering of members and friends of the Mothers' Union at the- meeting held on Thursday in the Presbyterian Hall, Balmoral Road, on "The Temperamental Child." She exhorted the mothers to remember that each child was an individual, and to treat him accordingly, to blame less and praise more, and to try to understand each child from the child's point of view as well as her own. Mrs. Gilmour, president, welcomed visitors from the Mount Albert and Mount Eden branches. Miss Doris Meeeer recited, and Mrs. Ecclee sang.

The annual general meeting of the Mount Albert Croquet Club was held in the pavilion on Thursday. Mre. Windsor presided and presented the prizes won during the season to the following:— A championship, Mrs. Maxwell; A doubles, Meedamee Windeor and Potter; B championship, Mrs. Lowe; B doubles, Meedamee Lowe- and Hawke; handicap doubles, Mesdames Maxwell and McKay; A progressive, Mrs. Alder; B progressive, Mre. The Papatoctoe Tennis Club held its annual dance on Friday in the Town Hall, Papatoetoe, when the decorations in bamboo, pink and yellow streamers, with coloured lighting effects, gave the hall a festive appearance. During the evening the inter-club and club trophies were presented by Mr. R. B. Hardie and Mr. L. W. Swan, president and secretary of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. In his address Mr. Hardie commented on the large membership and financial position of the club. The hosts for the evening were Mr. E. Burnside and Mr. C. Nicholson. Mre. R. J. Hamilton, of Gladwyn Road, Epsom, the president of the Auckland Croquet Association, entertained the past presidents, and executive members at a delightful bridge and 500 party recently. Scarlet iiolly and poinesettias and wide crystal bowls of early primroses made effective decorations. The past presidents present were: Mesdames Oswald, C. Schnauer, Copelnnd, W. Perry, Garrard"; vice-presidents, Mesdames Badeley, Cole, Finch, Gallahor, Torrance, McGill, Cutforth, Powley, Webber, A. H. Ecesing, Price; Miss Brown. Guests were: Mesdamee McDonald, Harvey, Isemonger, Newell, Somcrville, C Jones, McGruer and Mahoney. Prize winners were: Mesdames Cutforth, Gallalicr and Perry.

To mark the occasion of the departure of Canon and Mrs. Hobday from the St. Columba Anglican parochial district, Grey Lynn, a social evening was held in the church hall on Thursday last. The gathering, which wae unusually large, marked the esteem in which the retiring vicar was held by his late parishioners — not for some considerable time has there been such a well attended function. The major portion of a varied programme wae given by the Tres Bon troupe —a company of talented girl performers,'wlio displayed their versatility in numerous items and sketches. During the evening the canon was made the recipient of a gold-mounted pen and pencil, and Mrs. Hobday was presented with a cut glass flower bowl and a bouquet of flowers. The canon, in acknowledging the gift, referred to his many and close associations with the people of the district he was now leaving. Since he had come there ten years ago he had seen many changee, the most noteworthy of which was the erection of a new church, of which the parishioners were proud. Long , before a new church had been planned, but it was T.ot until a year ago when he had the honour of being vicar that the new building had materialised. Then followed the introduction of the incoming vicar, the Rev. H. Jacks, to whom was extended a hearty welcome. After supper the company indulged in some favourite old-time waltzes, and the evening was brought to a- conclusion with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."

The Bclinont branch of the Mothers' Union was held on Thursday afternoon beginning with the special service he M in St. Michael's and All Angels' Church, conducted by the Rev. F. Piggot. A special address to mothers was given by the Rev. E. H. Trill, vicar of St. Peter s, Takapuna, on "How the Church Helps in the Home." After the service the congregation adjourned to the Parish Hall, where the business meeting was held, and afternoon tea was served by Mesdames S. J. Clark, T. H. Jbnes, Drew, Boldro, Thompson and Macarthy. At the close of the meeting Mr. Piggot proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Trill.
