WOMAN SENT TO GAOL.
SLY-GROG SELLING. POLICE RAID ON SHOP. TAUMARUNUI, Friday. On charges of selling liquor and keeping liquor for sale, Elsie Clara Howie was to-day sentenced to imprisonment for one month by Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M. The- woman faced six charges of selling and one of keeping liquor for sale. A police search of tJ»e premises occupied by accused waq described by Constable H. Hedley. Tjvo men wore found in the kitchen, and accused said she was giving a party. Five empty beer bottles, ono empty gin bottle and five empty glasses were found. Accused showed Sergeant Sivyer a case containing 24 bottles of ale. There were also shown seven empty bottles in a bedroom. The premises were usually frequented by men of drinking habits. Constable R. T. Chaytov, who visited accused's shop with a friend on several occasions, said he had bought liquor there, including a lemonade bottle full of whisky for which he paid 10/. Defendant said her husband got in cases of beer on February 5, March 5 and March 28, and she got in' a case of beer on April 11. Her husband had made money at Te Aroha and To Kuiti races. Accused said she had never seen Constable Chaytor before seeing him in court and she denied selling him liquor.
