(By Roy Avery, Ponsonby ; age 16.) Pat while laying bricks fell from the fourth floor to the sidewalk. His friend Mike, and a doctor ran to pick Kim up. "He's dead," said the doctor, sadly,' whereupon Pat sat up and said, "I'm not dead." Gently Mike pushed hie friend back. "Now you be quiet Pat," he said firmly. "This man's a doctor and he knows best." * • * • (By Alma Hutchinson, Onehunga; age IS.) A village cobbler was a notorious poacher. Very early one morning he entered the wood of a neighbouring gentleman in pursuit of his nefarious practice. The gentleman, who had been unable to sleep, was also taking an early walk in the wood, and the two met. "Hello!" said the gentleman, "what are you doing here so early in the morning?" "Nay, eir," said the cobbler, "what arc you doing here?" "I am out to get an appetite for my breakfast," he replied. "And I to get a breakfast for ,my appetite," said the cobbler.
