WATER CHARGES.
SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS. CONSIDERATION BY COUNCIL. Water charges wore considered by the City Council last evening-, when the public service committee reported that it had exhaustively considered the question and recommended that the present .system by which city consumers metered for "extraordinary supply" are relieved from payment of water rates be amended that the rate be levied in all eases,, and that the quarterly meter account be submitted only when in excess of one-quarter of the rate on assessment; that hotels and lodging houses (where accommodation is provided for five or more lodgers) be metered, but pay a quarterly minimum; that meters be owned by the city instead of by the consumer, this to apply to future installations and renewals ; that meter rent, instead of being fixed at 10 per cent of cost of [meter, be charged on a fixed scale, according to size; that non-consumers' rate be increased from i per cent to 1J per cent.
Tlic coininittce reported that the above would necessitate an amendment to the by-laws. His Worship eaid the matter was very involved, and on Iris motion it was decided to refer it to a special meeting of the council.
