DAY AND NIGHT IN RAIN.
ELDEBXY WOMAN'S ORDEAL. FORTUNATE TO BE FOUND. Mrs. Edith Whitehead, of Thames, aged 00, who was found by relief workers in Grafton Gully below the bridgo yesterday afternoon with a broken leg is making satisfactory progress at the Auckland Hospital. When found she was suffering greatly from exposure, and it is believed that she had been a day and a night in the rain. Mrs. Whitehead, who had been staying with her son at Mount Albert, was accustomed to go for short waiki during the day. She left home on Monday afternoon to go shopping and when she did not return her relatives began a search, and the police were informed. Nothing was known of her movements until 6he was found yesterday afternoon.
The paths in the lower portion cf Grafton Gully are very slippery and steep. It was fortunate that she was found in time, as the men had not been working near there for about a week. While- lying disabled, Mrs. Whitehead endeavoured to shelter herself with an umbrella.
