HOLDINGS IN NORTH.
» \TERY LITTLE COAI IN STOCK. PORTLAND HAS 0000 TONS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Tuesday. Except at Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland cement works, where tho stocks are about 6000 tons, enough for six months, very little coal is being held in North Auckland. Since the strike began the Hikurangi mine has ceased fulfilling orders, and the stock on hand is only sufficient for the requirements of the mine. Ten officials are hewing coal for the boilers and, with tho emergency men, 30 are employed all told at the mine. Tho Waro Co-operative Collieries have little coal on hand. Since the flooding it has just about succeeded in fulfilling: tho weekly contract of 800 tons to thei cement company.
The private mines functioning in this district are not a considerable factor. Tho output of private mines at Hikurangi varies from 10Q to 150 tons weekly. At Whareora the output would be below that figure, and the party at Ruatangata produces about 40 tons weekly. The only other mine in the North is at Avoca, where workings are not developed to any extent. |
