BOOK TITLES. JUDGES PLEASED WITH ENTRIES. INTRODUCING A NEW AND NOVEL COMPETITION. Dear Boys and Girls, — I was astonished at the number of book titles that competitors were able to work into stories in the way described in the competition announcement a fortnight ago. The novel task of writing a story by linking together the titles of hooks written by Dickens and Scott was evidently one that appealed to Budgetites, for entries were heavy. Over a score of competitors submitted work which contained' in excess of thirty book names a display of litera.-y knowledge most satisfactory these days when the delightful tales of yesterday are seldom withdrawn from th»ir dusty corner on the family bookshelf. Jean Hill, of Waitakere, topped the list with a total of 56 separate titles—a lead of six over Coates Milsom, Waterloo Quadrant, Auckland. This last entry was sent in by a 12-year-old, and the book titles ran through a most interesting and well-written story. Audrey Retter, Remuera, and Muriel Branscombc, Mount Albert, tied for third place, but the prize was awarded the former because the story /^\ was a better one. r^^L^a^*^" This week's competition is a most | N*r/1 //> £. *4^of^^ interesting one, and new to these «LTJ V/^'^^^^^ columns. In another column 'will be seen a picture of several men, all cut off a little below the knee. Elsewhere is another picture, in which may be seen the parts that have been cut off. The task set for competitors is to couple the bodies with the correct set of legs. Observation and deduction, combined with just a little thought, will be needed in this task, but the puzzle should provide an hour or so of fireside fun during the next seven days. All work must be. set out in the following style: i Name . . .1. . . ~.■. .. . ~.,.,. ....... ■ Section Address -. ~.,.„.. . ... . J Age . . .ri.-. .-. .-. . . .:.....-.-..,.,. . . . Join the Legs Puzzle Head. I Legs. ~ 27 I 40 There are two sections in this puzzle. For those under twelve, section A, there will be six book prizes, whilst in section B (12 and over) there will be twelve prizes of 2/6. Competitors are reminded of the necessity of carefully reading and carrying out the competition rules in order to save their work from disqualification.
