AUCKLAND CRICKET.

DACRE WANTS TO BE COACH

S.A. TEST BALL FOR VIVIAN

KIDDOLLS CLT TO PEARSON

At a meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association last night an application for the position of coach was made by C. C. Dacre through the North Shore Club.' It was .stated that Dacre would be leaving England on September 7 and would arrive early in October. The matter was referred to the coach committee.

The >icw Zealand Council forwarded the ball used in the second Test match, New Zealand versus South Africa, on the occasion of the first Test match century made for New Zealand in the Dominion. The council desired the association to present the ball to H. G. Vivian on some suitable occasion.

It was decided to present the Riddolls Memorial Cup for the most improved senior player last season to 11. P. Pearson of the King's Old Boys' Club.

The doubtful strength of senior club cricket in Auckland has been a source of worry to the management committee of the association for some seasons, and various suggestions towards effecting an improvement in this direction have been given earnest consideration from time to time. With this object in view a subcommittee, comprising -Messrs. E. E Haider, L. B. Schnauer, P. Shaw. C A. Sneddon and X. (J. Sneddon, was appointed during last .season to investigate the matter fully during the off season, the mam point at issue being the proposed reduction in the number of senior teams from eight to six. Extensive inquiries have been made by the sub-committee, which included opinions on the matter from various associations in Australia and New Zealand, as well as from local clubs, tiie result being the following recommendations:—

(1) ihat the number of teams for the senior grade for the forthcoming season be not reduced from .eight to six. (2) That the designation "senior grade B" for this grade be no longer used, and in substitution therefore the designation "first grade juniors" be used. The subcommittee was of the opinion that the name senior grade B tetided to create a false impression in the minds of the public and the players as to the correct standard of this grade. There were many players in the senior grade B who were worthy of and should be playing senior grade, and there were many senior players who were not at present worthy of that grade. The sub-committee considered that the proposed alteration of name should expedite the correct grading of senior players.

(3) With a view to maintaining an even standard in the senior teams the rule governing transfers be altered to give the management committee discretionary powers. In making this recommendation the sub-committee was actuated by the opinion that there had been a good deal of pirating of players among clubs, and the management, committee should prevent this practice per medium of a strict system of transfers.

The sub-committee's report stated that Grafton, North Shore, University and V.M.C.A. Clubs had intimated that they were opposed to a reduction in the number of teams. The following proposal, forwarded by the Eden Club, was recommended by the sub-committee for the management committee's earnest consideration:—That the reduction of the number of teams from eight to six is favoured, also the reintroduction of the district scheme, and that the junior clubs be equitably divided up and affiliated to the six senior clubs. It was decided to defer decision on the recommendations until the next meeting in July.
