SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Under the patronage of tie management the combined staff of the Milne j and Choyce Sports Club gave their first, social of the year last evening. The first part of the programme was in the i form of a concert, the following members contributing excellent items: Mrs. .McWhinnie, Misses Fowler, O'Connor, Jiambert, Messrs. Reg. Morgan, Jones, Lucas, Beach, Rasmusson, Kemdall, Johnson and Margiaon. Games, dancing and cards were the second half of the programme. Dainty flowers were arranged in the Tudor room, which was used as the supper room. • , « » ■ • To mark the occasion of presenting Sister Faulkner with her P.C.R. honours, Court Maide Marion (A.0.F.) gave a social evening at the Foresters' Hall, Welleeley Street, on Monday last. The meeting which preceded the social was presided over by Chief Hanger Sister Spalding, ! who welcomed the different visiting Courts. In making the presentation, Brother Spinley spoke of the esteem in which Sister Faulkner was held, and of the able manner in which she had carried out the various duties attached to the offices she bad held. Music for the dancing was played by Sister Leece, and extras were given by Brother White. * • • * The quarterly meeting of the council of the Auckland Mothers' Union was held in Bishopscourt library on Monday, when there was a full attendance of branch representatives in the Auckland diocese, presided over by Mrs. Averill. The diocesan secretary, Mrs. Simkin, read the correspondence, after which the council was addressed by Mrs. Talbot and others. Speaking of evolution, in the course of an interesting address, Mrs. j Talbot traced the development of life in the hands of an all-wise Creator from the lowest forms up to the highest creation, that of man, endowed with a soul. She impressed on all the necessity of keeping that soul and body true and pure in order to carry out the purposes of a creator. At the close of the meeting the members were entertained to tea by Mrs. Averill. « * • • Mrs. Arthur Cerutty, ' of Gardner Road, Epsom, gave a bright entertainment for her friends on Saturday evening. Included in the guests were the members of her Empire ball set. Charades, games and dancing made the time pass merrily. Autumn leaves, large rlumps of salvia and Iceland poppies decorated the various rooms. The prizewinners were Miss Jean MacCormick and Mr. T. Wright. The hostess received her guests' in a black lace and scarlet floral corsage, Miss Cerutty wore a flowered taffeta. Among those present were: Mesdames Almao (Suva), L. Browne, G. Mrs. M. J. Barr, Courtville Flats, gave a birthday party for her daughter Yvonne on Saturday afternoon. Games were played, each child receiving a balloon and a novelty. Among those present were: Nancy Hammond, Jean Hartle, Eljzabeth Popplewell (Suva), Barbara Storey, Anna Burns, Myra Harrison, Winnie Churchill, Arthur Joylin, Dyrick Gallaher, Desmond Farrell.

The St. Helier's Bowling Club held their fortnightly "500" tournament in the bowling pavilion last evening. The first prizes were won by Mrs. Hirst and Mr. Bradbury, and the travelling prizes by Miss Appleyard and Mr. Bcid.

The Otahuhu Social Service Association, which has been organised to provide for necessitous cases of distress in Otahuhu and neighbouring districts, held a clothes drive last Saturday fortnight, and since that date a committee of ladies have been engaged in classifying the proceeds of the "drive." Last week, two depots wore opened in Otahuhu by the association, whoi a staff of 17 ladies worked hard in distributing clothing, footwear and vegetables. Fresh mutton was supplied to about 200 families, two men being occupied in cutting up the 22 carcases. Over 00 families, including about 200 children, received clothing and footwear. The applicants for relief produced certificates signed by a local clergyman, who was conversant with the needs of the particular case of distress. Altogether two tons of vegetables, which comprised mainly pumpkins and marrows, were distributed.

A reception was given at a luncheon held yesterday in the reception hall of Milne and Choyce, to Mrs. Elsie Lincoln Benedict, who was passing through Auckland to America on the Mariposa. Mrs. Benedict, who was accompanied by Mr. Benedict, Mr. Ward and the Misses Ward, is returning to America after two years spent in lecturing in Australia. She was welcomed by Mr. X. Cole, the Rev. W. Gilmore and Mr. and -Mrs. G. D. Anstiss. The party is going on to Canada and the United States, and then to Mrs. Benedict's homo at Los Angeles, where they will remain for a month. While in Australia Mrs. Benedict came in contact with a young boy, who attended one of the lectures at which a competition was held for the best answers on what she had been speaking about. When she asked for the winner to come forward she was astonished to find that it was a boy of nine and a half. He was invited to spend his holidays with her and then to remain and go to school, and before she left Australia she. legally adopted the child, who was without close relations, and she is taking him back with her to America to give him education.

The president, Mrs. J. F. Potter, occupied the chair at the meeting of the management committee of the Awataha Girl Guides, which was held in the Xorthcote Parish Hall. At the conclusion of the business the vice-president, Mrs. F. W. Wilkes, referred to the intended departure from Northcote, towards the end of this month, of Mrs. Potter, to reside at Bichmond, in (lie Nelson Province. As a token of Ihe high regard entertained for her and the splendid work performed. Mrs. Potter was asked to accept a boudoir clock. The District Commissioner, Miss Winifred Johnson, and Mrs. E. B. Gilfillan, vice-president of the Birkenhead Women's Association, also spoke. Mrs. Wilkes was appointed acting-president, and Mrs. M. S. James was elected vicepresident.
