ON STRIKE.
COAL MINERS OUT. DOMINION-WIDE BALLOT. WEST COAST MINES IDLE. LEADERS DESIRE CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, this day. Tlie proposal to call a general strike of New Zealand eoalniincrs has been carried by a two to one majority in n Dominion-wide ballot of Miners' Unions, and the cessation of work commenced at midnight. The object of the strike is to rcsiot the imposition of the coal owners' new terms. The recent conference of owners and .nen in the North Island broke down upon the refusal by the miners of the owners' claim for the unrestricted right to engage and discharge men. The position in the South island is now practically on the same footing, the men contending that, although some districts have been operating under the old agreement, the conditions imposed ill northern districts are intended to be extended to other fields.
The miner*.' leaders state that they arc anxious for a conference at the earliest date, but desire that conditions shall not lie laid down by the employers before the conference, but that the old agreement shall remain operative until replaced by a new agreement.
If such a conference were granted, tlio work could.be at once .resumed.
