WOMAN SHOP-LIFTER.
SECOND WHANGAREI FINE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. A second shop-lifter, Mary Venii" Baker, was fined by Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday afternoon on a charge of stealing- a pair of slippers, valued at 2/6, the property of William Maine. An assistant at the shop, Lillian Brown, said that on May 23 she was cleaning the window. There were two ladies outside. One went into the shop and the other picked up a pair of slippers from outside. Detective-Sergeant Robertson said tbul defendant had admitted taking , the slippers. She said she needed them. Jlfihusband was on relief work. "Even if you are in a bud way financially I cannot reduce the lino," said tliu magistrate. Remarking that shoplifting was fairly common Mr. Morrieaid shopkeepers were ill-advised tn place their goods in such positions that they were easily pilfered. Accused was fined £5 and costs.
