LOCAL BODIES.
WHANGAREI BOROUGH COUNCIL. WHANGAREI, this day. The sitting of the Whangarei Borough Council laist night was the longest in re-cent years, lasting from 7.15 p.m. to Ratine Reduction.—The estimates, as approved, permitted a reduction in the consolidated rate from fi'M to 614(1 in the £. It was decided to allocate £750 for concrete footpathing under No. 5 Scheme. Library Extension.—Mr. Bramsby suggested that advantage might bo taken of the new regulations which permitted the employment of skilled labour by the Unemployment Board for the extension of the library. Electricity Charges.—The charge for electricity for lighting was reduced by %d per unit. A reduction of £1 in the charee for hot water heaters, or alternately cancellation of meter rent (18/ per annum), caused a long discussion, and finally the subject was referred to a committee to investigate the complaints regarding this service. Plunket Society.—To keep the Plunkct Society in existence, tho council decided make a grant of £50. Fire Brigade Request.—A deputation from the Fire Brigade waited upon the council asking for better control of traffic during fires. A (scheme whereby all traffic should stand still for five minutes was favoured, and ■ referred to a committee for the drafting of a bj'-law.
