Sir Thomas and Lady Sidey gave a ball in Dunedin last week when over a thousand guests were present. ♦ » * *

The women of Czecho-Slovakia will be the subject of a talk to be given by Mrs. R. M. Algie to members of the Lyceum Club on Thursday. Mre. Algie recently spent some time travelling in England and on the Continent.

A dance was held at Muriwai House on Saturday evening, when a Monte Carlo was won by Miss E. Allen and Mr. R. Jones. Among those present were: Misses L. Coster, K. and I. Wightman, E. Allen, McQueen (I*apakura) and S. Matheson.

A surprise party was taken to the home of Miss Una Snowball, of Maungakiekie Avenue, One Tree Hill, by her friends on Saturday evening last, when interesting items were rendered by Mr. Vivian Dalton. Amongst < those, present were: Mre. Snowball, Miss Una Snowball, midnight blue floral ninon, and coatee to match; Mesdanies Chas. Hook, Edwin Dalton, Verran, Misses Vera Campbell, Ella Anderson, Norma Phillips, Betty Snowball, N. McAlwain, and Eady.

A marriage of interest in theatrical circles took place last week at St. Mark's Church, Darling Point, Sydney, when Miss Dorothy Tait, younger daughter of Mr. E. J. Tait, was married to Mr. Byrnn Wrigley, a nephew of the late Mr. William Wrigley, an American millionaire. The bride chose an unusual grown of the new white wool lace. The bride's mother wore a gown of wine wool crepe de chine covered with a diagonal striped coat.

The Kingsford Hall, Otahuhu, was the scene of the moet popular old-time dance held in Otahuhu this season, the hall being filled to capacity. The hall was beautifully decorated with coloured streamers and Chinese lanterns, while the lighting effect wae well carried out. A good orchestra supplied a- selection of popular old-time numbers, and the programme comprised two Monte Carlo waltzes, a twilight -waltz and a streamer waltz. The first Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. Horan and Miss IT. Ball, the winners of the second bein? Mr. A. Dando and Mfes E. Bremian. "Mrs. K. Edelstein played two extras.

Misses Mavis Miller and Mary Matthews were joint hostesses for a surprise party given to Miss Muriel Sanders at her residence, Mountain Road, last weekend. The ballroom was opened for dancing, and the extra baskets of flowers brought by the guests filled the suppr table decorations. Miss Mavis Miller wore a pink faille and georgette frock. Miss Mary Matthews was in flowered taffeta. Among those present were: Missos Mavis O'Neill, Noreen and Nancy Abbott, Nell Grey, Dorothy Evans, Zena Saundere, D. Saunders, Marie Jones, Angus Smith, Rita Saundera, Elaine Wilson, Rae and Belle Hogan.

Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Wilson, of Mititai, Northern Wairoa, gave a coming-of-age dance for their son Hector, in the Mititai Hall. Extras were played by Mrs. A. W. Christie, Misses T. Smith and V. Pritchard. During the evening Mr. A. Ellison presented the gucat of honour with a handsome silver cigarette case, as a gift from his many friends. Mrs. J. G. Wilson received her guests in gold satin bcaute. Among those present were: Mesdames W. J. Ellison, W. J. Curnow, Crav, A. W. Christie-, F. Davenport, R. Sills, G. Morrison, W. H. Curnow, H. Kerr, R. E. Sills.

The bridge circle of the Overseas League held it* fortnightly meeting at the clubrooms last evening. Despite the boisterous weather a large number of members attended. The rooms were, gay with bowl* of winter bloome and autumn leaves. Miss Laura Montgomery was the convener and the hostesses were: Dr. Glad ve Montgomery, Mesdames Jamieson, "Frith, Gebb, Scully, Allison, Coulter, Emerson, Saunders-Jomes, Smart, Thompson, Angwin, Soden, Blake, White, Misses Lavender (2), Anderson, Craig (2), Ariell, Fox (2), Montgomery, Kingston, Fraser, Laird, Knight, Early, McDonald, Buggy, Berry, Withers and West.

A gift evening was held in the Turanga-o-moana Hall, Matamata, for Miss R. Davison. Dancing was enjoyed, and Miss N. Pennell supplied the music. Miss 0. Gunn played an extra. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. A. Dixon and partner. Miss C. Gunn sang. The guest of honour wore shell pink satin. Among those present were: — Mesdames T. Davison, R. J. Maisey, 11. Gouk, K. The Brixton Cricket Club held a dance on Saturday evening at the Dominion Hall to raise funds for the oncoming season. The evening was greatly enjoyed, and among those present were: Miss F. The 1.0.0. F. and Rebekah Lodges held their annual ball on Friday evening at Opotiki. The hall was decorated with brightly coloured streamers and bunting, which fell from the central decoration of three links, representing the emblem of the lodges. The supper room also presented a gay scene with its coloured streamers and the dainty table decorations of scarlet berries, white camellias and red geraniums. The supper was served by the ladies' committee. During the evening , iiovelty dances were won by Miss E. Parkinson and partner and Miss McCallum and partner. Among those dancing were: Mesdame-s A. The Young People"s Christian Temperance Union held a meeting of the Temperance Societies' room, Unity Building, last Saturday evening, Miss Carter presiding. It was decided to hold a social at the next' meeting to celebrate the fifteenth birthday of their union. A duet was given by Misses Appleby and Mathieson. Miss Read contributed an elocutionary item. Temperance addresses were given by Misses Matlriesen, Hullah, Appleby and L. Adams. White Ribbon day was observed, Misses Read and Appleby speaking on the official organ of the W.C.T.U. and "The Beacon," which is the young people's paper. A fortnightly sewing meeting for Maori mission work and orphan homes was announced.

Tho Dargaville District Old Pupils' Association held their annual reunion ball in the Hibernian Hall, which was decorated with streamers of the association's colours, red, blue and gold. Extras wero played by Misses I. McCarrol, Lovegrove and D. Bourke. During the evening Mr. D. Cole, president of the association, welcomed visitors and members. Among those present were: Mesdames G. The iifteenth annual presentation dance of tho Otahuhu Sailing Club was held in the Public Hall, Otahuhu, last night. The Monte Carlo waltz competitions were won by Mr. P. Piper and Mies M. Tucker and Mr. E. Finn and Mies M. Thorpe. Extras were played by Mr. R. Edeletein. During the evening tho Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, presented, the prizes to the winners of the sailing and swimming races held during the season. Amonget those present were:—Mesdames H. T. Clements, J. Grahame, N. Walters, R. Edelstein, A. A return day for Mis. Moran, the president, was held on Thursday on the Grey Lynn croquet lawns. Progressive croquet was played and the winners were: —A, Mrs. Binne and Mrs. Chambers; B, Mre. Buckley and Mrs. Fellowe. Tho visitors' prize was won by Mre. Boag. Hidden numbers, Mrs. Caitcheon and Miss Turkington; consolation, Mrs. Rose and Mrs. Mason. Prizes won during the year in ma tehee were also presented, tho winners being:—A championship, Mrs. Moran; intermediate championship, Mrs. Trewhecla; B championship, Mrs. Wakefield, runner-up, Mrs. Fellows; A handicap, Mre. ■ Chambers, runner-up, Mre.
