THE FEAST OF JANUS.
Few people realise that Xew Year's Day as a festival is a survival of pagan customs and celebrations, a perpetuation of the "Feast of Janus" of Roman days. It was the "two-faced god" who gave his name to thy» first month of the year, and it was Numa Pompilius, the second king of ancient Rome, who decreed that Janary should be the first month of the year. The first day of the first month thus became a great festival in the early daye of. Roman history.
