UNEMPLOYED NOW.
MAY BECOME UNEMPLOYABLE TRAGIC POSITION OF BOYS. GUIDANCE OFFICER'S WARNING. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHKISTCHURCH, this day. The ecriousnese of the position with regard to unemployment among boys cannot possibly be exaggerated, and Government recognition and backing for the work of voluntary organisations in placing boys in jobs is essential, in the opinion of Mr. G. M. Keys, vocational guidance officer. ''The position is even more tragic than that of unemployed men," said Mr. Keys. "Tho youths come from school fresh and eager, only to be told that there is no place for them. Either they get eadly depressed within the first few months, and let despair rob them of their courage and keenness, or else they gradually drift into a nasty, almost Bolshevik, outlook, generating a resentment that provides fertile ground for anti-social feeling." ■Speaking of the work of the Boys' Unemployment Committee, formed in Chrtetchurch some years ago, Mr. Keys id it now had the backing of other city organisations. Not only had it established a boys' bureau, and enlisted the sympathy and co-operation of employers all over the district, but it had devoted special attention to the occupation of those boys for whom, in the meantime at any rate, no work could be found. They had had wonderful support from the Y.M.C.A. and also from the Technical College. "Anything the Government does to help, even in these times of restricted h'naneee, must prove a good investment,' said Mr. Keys. He added that the oosition was one of grave danger. There was the possibility of theso boys becoming not only unemployed, but unemployable, and that was what the committee, himself, and others were lighting against.
