RECIPROCAL TRADE.

NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA HOPES OF OTTAWA DECISIONS. "Many business men in Australia are of opinion that the Ottawa Conference will result in better reciprocal trade relations between the various units of the British Empire, and with a view to exploring the New Zealand market I have come across to the Dominion," said Mr. W. Cavil], manager of Walter Cavill and Co., Ltd., Sydney, who arrived this morning by the Mariposa.

"My firm wants a high-grade cheese, and wo can purchase it in New Zealand, but the tariff is against its importation. I think Ottawa will alter that," he said. "There arc many primary lines that we could import from the Dominion if the tariff was right. Often the New South Wales market is short of blue peas, and we would like to buy our deficiency from New Zealand, but an unfavourable tariff has prevented this. "The Australian-Canadian tariff treaty is working wonders. Australia is buying large quantities of Canadian goods, and Canada is reciprocating. Australia has a good market for New Zealand products if the duty is light. Your Stilton cheese is miles ahead of Australian, and your butter is of better quality, but we cannot take butter, as New South Wales is over-producing that commodity now."
