NO INCOME TAX PAID.
SEAMEN'S OFFICIALS FINED. RETURNS NEVER FURNISHED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Four charges of failing to furnish income tax returns for the years 1928, 1929, 1930, and 1931 were admitted in the Magistrate's Court to-day by Maurice Wall and Fenton Patrick Walsh, officials of the Seamen's Union.
The assistant Crown solicitor said defendants had never furnished any returns nor paid any tax. Over the last four years Wall's income had averaged £360, the total tax on which was £10, and Walsh's income had averaged £373 a year, the total tax payable being £11 15/1. In these days, when taxes were So much in the public eye, there could be no question of the matter being overlooked.
Mr. E. Page, S.M., fined each defendant £6 on the first charge and £2 on each of the others. They are to pay costs, amounting to £1 11/ on each charge also.
