PATIENTS' UNPAID FEES.
LARGE AMOUNT WRITTEN OFF. Patients' accounts amounting to £32,831 13/8 were written off at this week's meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. "The accounts in some cases extend over a number of years,'' said an official of the board, "the majority over periods of from two to two and a half years. This is not the only occasion on which accounts have been written off. Periodically such amounts are placed before the board. Although the accounts are written off they are still noted, and if there is any chance of some money being recovered when patients are cured and have gone hack to work, it is made the most of. In some cases, however, the men have no money at all and I can safely say that 80 per cent of these accounts are never recovered.
"This year the Christchurch Hospital lias had to deal with many unemployed patients and men on relief work, and no doubt that accounts for the amounts being larger. But, on the other hand, the fee totals have also been large this year owing to the increase in April from 9/ to 12/. That is another thing which has made the writings-off larger."
